Here's a secret most observatory buyers learn too late: the observatory itself is the easy part. We build it, deliver it, and install it. The part that determines how much you'll enjoy it for the next 20 years is the work that happens before delivery day - choosing the spot, pouring the pad, and planning the electrical run. Get those three right and everything else falls into place.
Step 1: Choose the Spot
Walk your yard at night, not during the day. What matters to a stargazing shed is invisible at noon: sight lines to the sky, light trespass from neighbors, and how the southern horizon looks from each candidate location. Bring a compass (your phone works) and evaluate each spot against these criteria:
Sky access, especially south
In the northern hemisphere, most of what you'll observe - planets, the Moon, the deep-sky objects along the ecliptic and the Milky Way core - transits across the southern sky. Prioritize a location where the view from southeast to southwest is as unobstructed as possible. Trees, rooflines, and hills to the north matter much less, with one exception below.
A clear line to Polaris
You need to see the north celestial pole to polar align an equatorial mount. Stand at each candidate spot and find Polaris (about 40 degrees up in the northern sky for most of the US). If a tree or your house blocks it, alignment becomes much harder. A gap in the treeline is enough - you only need Polaris itself, not the whole northern sky.
Distance from heat sources
Heat rising from rooftops, driveways, HVAC condensers, and even large patios creates air turbulence that ruins seeing. Keep your observatory at least 30 to 50 feet from your house if the yard allows it, and avoid placing it directly downwind of a roof that has baked in the sun all day.
Light management
Note where neighbor floodlights, street lights, and your own house lights fall. You can block a lot with a fence line, a hedge, or simply the observatory's own walls, but it's far easier to pick a darker corner now than to fight light trespass later. Also think about your own back door: motion-sensor lights that trip every time you walk to the observatory get old fast.
Practical access
Remember that our delivery crew needs to get the observatory to the spot. A clear path from the street or driveway, gates wide enough for equipment, and reasonably level ground along the route all make delivery day simple. Step 2: Spec the Concrete Pad
Every SkyShed installs on a level concrete pad. This is the foundation of the entire system, literally, and it's the one piece of site work you'll hire out locally. Here's what your concrete contractor needs to know:
- Size: The pad should match your observatory footprint. For a 10x12 SkyShed, that's a 10x12 pad. We'll confirm exact dimensions for your model when you order.
- Thickness: A standard 4-inch reinforced residential pad is sufficient for the structure. Ask for fiber mesh or rebar reinforcement, which is standard practice for any quality contractor.
- Level matters more than usual: Tell your contractor the pad needs to be flat and level, not sloped for drainage the way a patio would be. The roll-off roof rails depend on a level structure. A quality contractor can hold the pad level within a quarter inch.
- Cure time: Concrete needs about a week to cure before the observatory is installed on it. Plan your pour at least two weeks before your delivery date to leave room for weather delays.
The separate pier footing
If you're planning a permanently mounted telescope, this is the single most important detail on this page: pour a separate, isolated footing for your telescope pier at the same time as the pad. The pier footing should be independent of the main slab, with a gap or isolation joint around it, so footsteps inside the observatory never transfer vibration to your mount during imaging.
The typical approach is a Sonotube form, 10 to 12 inches in diameter, extending below your local frost line, poured with anchor bolts (J-bolts) set to match your pier's base plate. Your concrete contractor pours it in the same visit as the pad. Decide your telescope's position inside the observatory before the pour - we can help you plan this based on your model and your mount.
Step 3: Plan the Electrical Run
Every SkyShed arrives with a 70-amp electrical panel already installed and wired inside the observatory. Your electrician's job is to get power from your house to that panel. Planning this before delivery keeps everything on schedule:
- The trench: Power runs underground in conduit from your house panel to the observatory location. Your electrician will size the wire for the distance and load. Longer runs need heavier gauge wire, which is a cost factor worth knowing early.
- Trench before the pad if possible: If the conduit needs to come up through or beside the pad, coordinate the trenching with your concrete contractor so the stub-up is in place before the pour.
- Permits: The electrical run requires a permit and inspection in virtually every jurisdiction. Your licensed electrician handles this as a routine part of the job. See our full permit guide for details.
- Think about internet too: If you plan to run your imaging rig remotely from the house, have your electrician pull an ethernet line in the same trench. It costs very little at trench time and saves you from wifi dead zones later.
Step 4: The Pre-Delivery Checklist
Here's the full sequence, in order, from decision to first light:
- Confirm zoning setbacks and any permit requirements with your municipality.
- Choose your location using the criteria above, and verify it meets setback distances.
- Schedule your concrete contractor. Pour the pad and the isolated pier footing together.
- Have your electrician trench and stub up conduit, ideally before or during the concrete work.
- Let the pad cure at least 7 days.
- We deliver and install your SkyShed on the pad, test the roll-off roof, and walk you through operation.
- Your electrician connects the supply line to the observatory panel and calls for inspection.
- Mount your telescope, polar align once, and you're done setting up. For good.
How Long Does All This Take?
For most customers, site prep runs 2 to 4 weeks of calendar time, and most of that is scheduling contractors rather than actual work. The concrete is a one-day pour. The electrical is typically a one or two day job. If you start site prep when you place your order, your yard is usually ready well before your observatory is.
