About Backyard SkyShed
Backyard SkyShed was born from a simple frustration.
Serious amateur astronomers spend thousands — sometimes tens of thousands — on precision telescopes and optical equipment. Then they waste their best viewing hours wrestling that gear in and out of storage, waiting for motors to cool, losing alignment, and chasing the clock before clouds roll in.
There had to be a better way.
We're part of MyShed Inc., a Pennsylvania-based builder with decades of experience constructing quality outdoor structures. When astronomers started coming to us asking for a real solution, we didn't adapt a storage shed and call it an observatory. We started from scratch — asking what a backyard astronomical observatory actually needs to perform night after night.
The result is the SkyShed.
Every SkyShed is purpose-built as a dedicated backyard astronomy observatory — not a converted garden shed, not a modified storage unit.
The centerpiece is our motorized roll-off roof, designed to open cleanly and fully so your telescope has an unobstructed view of the entire sky. No dome. No cranking. No fumbling in the dark. One motion, and you're under the stars.
Every structure is handbuilt at our facility at 5075 Lower Valley Road in Atglen, Pennsylvania — the heart of Lancaster County's renowned craftsman tradition. Quality is built in from the first board.
And when it's finished, we deliver your SkyShed fully assembled directly to your backyard, anywhere in the United States. You don't build it. You just start observing.
If you own a serious optical setup — a Celestron, a Meade, a Takahashi, an AP mount — you know how much precision matters. You also know how much time you lose to setup and breakdown.
The SkyShed is for the observer who is done losing that time.
Whether you're imaging deep sky objects from the dark skies of rural Arizona, tracking planets from a Mid-Atlantic backyard, chasing variable stars across the Northeast, or running a personal observatory in the Pacific Northwest — a SkyShed gives you a permanent, ready-to-use home for your equipment.
Set your mount. Dial in your polar alignment. Leave it. Come back the next clear night and start observing in minutes.
We ship to stargazers coast to coast.
Some of the best dark sky locations in the country sit outside of major metro areas — the high desert of Arizona and New Mexico, the rural Northeast, the mountain corridors of Colorado and Utah, the wide-open plains of the Midwest, and the quiet farmland of the Mid-Atlantic. Wherever your skies are darkest, we can deliver.

When your gear is worth more than most people's cars, your observatory has to protect it.
SkyShed structures are built to stand up to weather, to hold their shape season after season, and to give your equipment a stable, secure home year-round. This isn't a tent. It isn't a pop-up shelter. It's a real building — built by craftsmen, designed for astronomy.
